This training is an introduction to continuous modeling with FLAC2D and FLAC3D. At the end of the course, participants will master the graphical interface, documentation and the main modeling steps. Concepts are illustrated using a tunnel excavation example, from building the model geometry to results analysis. This introductory course provides the foundation for more advanced use of the software, which can be covered in more specific training modules.
Masonry is a heterogeneous anisotropic material, which is composed of units (e.g. bricks, stones, blocks etc.), bonded together with or without mortar. It is probably the oldest building material that is commonly used today. Although masonry is easy to construct, its mechanical behaviour is non-linear and thus complex to understand. The need to predict the in-service behaviour and load carrying capacity of masonry structures has led researchers to develop several computational strategies and tools that are characterized by different levels of complexity. The webinar describes a promising approach which is able to represent the discrete nature of masonry by the Discrete Element Method (DEM).
