This training is an introduction to continuous modeling with FLAC2D and FLAC3D. At the end of the course, participants will master the graphical interface, documentation and the main modeling steps. Concepts are illustrated using a tunnel excavation example, from building the model geometry to results analysis. This introductory course provides the foundation for more advanced use of the software, which can be covered in more specific training modules.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
Purpose
We drive the evolution of geological engineering and geosciences to improve the world, collaboratively developing innovative solutions to challenging problems.
40+ YEARS OF GEOTECHNICAL INNOVATION
History
Professor Charles Fairhurst was the Head of the Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering at the University of Minnesota in the late 1970s. During his time at the University, Charles saw the potential for a consulting firm that could elevate geotechnical research and application to new heights.
1981
After much discussion and planning, Itasca Consulting Group, Inc., was founded in 1981, led by Charles, Magnus Bergman, and John Markham.
1982
In 1982, Peter Cundall, a former University of Minnesota professor, became one of ITASCA’s first engineering consultants. Peter brought unparalleled experience and expertise to ITASCA, most notably, his trailblazing research on numerical modeling. In those early years, Peter continued to develop his research alongside the ITASCA team.
1984
In 1984, the team released the first numerical modeling code of its kind, UDEC followed closely by FLAC in 198?.
Today, ITASCA has 10 offices around the world and continues to pioneer significant advancements in geotechnical engineering and software development.
