FLAC is applied to study the behavior of progressively collapsing pillars. The effect of backfill confinement is evaluated by comparing different scenarios: no backfill, tight backfill and backfill with a 10 cm gap between the backfill and the roof. The peak/residual strength of the pillar is simulated using the strain-softening material model in FLAC, and the pore-collapse behavior of the backfill is simulated using the double-yield material model.
